We study the low energy effects of heavy fermions in an SU(Nc) gauge theory. This talk summarizes the results presented in ref[1] and extends that calculation for lattice regularization. The effect of heavy matter fields at low energies is expected to be no more than an induced effective gauge coupling. This phenomena is well known for lattice Wilson fermions where the fermion doublers induce a shift in the gauge coupling of the order of ∆β ≈ 0.3 for two flavors around β = 5.5. The idea that heavy fermions can induce continuum gauge fields (i.e. the induced gauge coupling βind = ∞) has a long history [2]. In a recent paper it was suggested that one flavor of adjoint scalar fields might induce a continuum gauge theory as well if the mass of the scalar is tuned appropriately [3]. It was argued furthermore that the scalar model can be solved in the large Nc limit. In this paper we calculate the gauge coupling induced by heavy fermions in the fundamental representation and investigate the condition under which the fermions induce a continuum gauge theory. We argue that a necessary condition is that the number of flavors Nf > 11Nc/2 but we cannot prove that it is a sufficient condition as well. We consider the Nf → ∞ sufficient condition here. The Conformal Window in SU(3) Yang-Mills

Yang-Mills theory is known to exhibit very different behavior as the number of light fermion flavors N f is varied. In particular, for sufficiently large N f the theory changes fro confining to conformal behavior in the infrared. We have obtained results for SU(3) Yang-Mills, based on the study of the running coupling through the Schrödinger Functional approach, that the transition between thes...

Low-energy features of SU(2) Yang-Mills theory with light gluinos

The numerical simulation we report on aims at a better understanding of the non-perturbative low-energy features of supersymmetric gauge theories. We concentrate on the simplest supersymmetric gauge theory, namely SU(2),N = 1 superYang-Mills. This model contains, in addition to the gauge field a massless Majorana fermion in the adjoint representation (called gluino). For the theoretical motivat...

Loop formulation of supersymmetric Yang-Mills quantum mechanics

We derive the fermion loop formulation of N = 4 supersymmetric SU(N) Yang-Mills quantum mechanics on the lattice. The loop formulation naturally separates the contributions to the partition function into its bosonic and fermionic parts with fixed fermion number and provides a way to control potential fermion sign problems arising in numerical simulations of the theory. Furthermore, we present a...

Supersymmetry and the Yang-Mills Effective Action at Finite N

We study the effective action of quantum mechanical SU(N) Yang-Mills theories with sixteen supersymmetries and N > 2. We show that supersymmetry requires that the eight fermion terms in the supersymmetric completion of the v terms be one-loop exact. We also show that the twelve fermion terms in the supersymmetric completion of the v terms are two-loop exact for N = 3. For N > 3, this no longer ...

Fermion zero-modes of a new constrained instanton in Yang-Mills-Higgs theory

Self-consistent Ansätze are presented for the leftand right-handed isodoublet fermion zeromodes of the constrained instanton I⋆ in the vacuum sector of euclidean SU(2) Yang-Mills-Higgs theory. These leftand right-handed fermion wave functions do not coincide and, most likely, have a relative shift between their peaks. This may be important for the fermion zero-mode contribution to the euclidean...

On the fermion spectrum of spontaneously generated fuzzy extra dimensions with fluxes

We consider certain vacua of four-dimensional SU(N) Yang-Mills gauge theory with the same field content as the N = 4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory, resulting from potentials which break the N = 4 supersymmetry as well as its global SO(6) symmetry down to SO(3)×SO(3). We show that the theory behaves at intermediate scales as Yang-Mills theory on M × S L × S 2 R with magnetic fluxes on the ext...
